Service Description
Do you love the natural beauty of birch trees? Look no further and join local artist and beloved A&C instructor, Susan Smith, in our Fused Glass: Birch Tree Slumped Dish workshop. In this advanced level workshop, students will build on the knowledge and skills previously learned in the Introduction to Fused Glass and intermediate level workshops, to create a small dish of their own design, using colorful glass and other unique embellishments. This workshop is the perfect opportunity for you to create your own personalized birch forest scene, that will be turned into a 4.5”x4.5” slumped dish. Instructor Susan Smith will teach class participants more advanced glass cutting and layering skills, as well as tips and techniques for bringing their design to "life." Additionally, class participants will learn about “slumping” - a technique that uses gravity and heat to make flat fused glass sag or bend into a ceramic mold. This techniques transforms flat, two-dimensional glass into three-dimensional, functional, or decorative shapes like bowls and plates. During this workshop, students will have the opportunity to share with their fellow classmates thoughts about birch trees and other trees natives to our area, all in a safe and welcoming environment. While this advanced level workshop will focus heavily on the techniques and skills required for more advanced glass fusing, instructor Susan Smith will also encourage class participants to create a dish that has personal significance as far as colors, designs, and symbols. At the end of the workshop, students will have the opportunity to share their experience with glass fusing as an art form and reflect on what they have learned with their fellow classmates. Leave with a more detailed understanding of the intricacies of fused glass as an art form, as well as the perfect piece of art to display and or use to hold items that are as special as you are! Ages 16+ This is an intermediate level workshop and may only be taken once. You may only register for this class if you have taken the Introduction to Fused Glass workshop and one Intermediate level workshop, previously held at Art & Connection. No exceptions, please. Class participants should come to class prepared with an idea, picture, or design for their birch trees slumped dish. Fired pieces will be available for pickup one week after the completion of the class.
