[SATURDAY CLASS] Learn and explore watercolor batik techniques, led by Tena Evans

Service Description

Join us at Art & Connection for our Dragon Fly Batik workshop, led by Tena Evans. In this workshop, class participants will have the unique opportunity to explore watercolor batik techniques, creatively using melted wax and water to create distinctive and vibrant paintings. As Tena teaches basic batik techniques, class participants will learn that watercolor batik is a unique art technique that mimics traditional wax-resist batik on cloth, by using watercolor paints on thin rice paper. By applying wax or masking fluid to preserve light areas, and then layering colors from light to dark, students will crumple the rice paper to create cracks, and then iron out the wax for a distinct, stained-glass look. Class participants will connect with each other as they explore a "Let's See What Happens" attitude throughout the class, because there is nothing exact about batik art! Tena will guide students through mistakes such as unintentional drops of wax and oozing color. The addition of the unexpected gives each batik an artsy look that students cannot achieve with any other medium. At the end of the class, each participants will have the opportunity to share and discuss their thoughts regarding the experience, including any hesitations or personal feelings regarding the experience. Leave with a framed piece of art that reflects your knowledge of these new techniques, as well as a shared creative experience with your classmates. Ages 16+ Art & Connection will offer four batik classes throughout 2026. Class participants may take one batik class, per calendar year. If you have already taken a batik class with Tena, please call to have your name added to the waitlist so that others may have the opportunity to learn this unique art form.
